James Madison played a major role in creating the U.S. Constitution at the 1787 Constitutional Convention and is known as the “Father of the Constitution.” He was the fourth President (1809-1817) during the War of 1812 against Britain. Madison was also one of the writers of the Federalist Papers – essays explaining why Americans should approve the Constitution.
