Thomas Jefferson was a key Founding Father who wrote most of the Declaration of Independence in 1776. He served as the third U.S. President and made the Louisiana Purchase, which doubled the size of U.S. He was also the first Secretary of State, handling foreign affairs. Later, he founded University of Virginia (1819) and wrote the Virginia Statute on Religious Freedom (1786), separating church and state.
