During the Cold War (1947-1991), America feared communism spreading from the Soviet Union across the world. There was also a real danger of a nuclear war, as both superpowers were armed with thousands of nuclear warheads capable of destroying the world. This grave danger became obvious during the Cuban Missile Crisis (1962). It was embedded in the MAD (Mutually Assured Destruction) doctrine.
