During the Cold War (1947-1991), the United States and the Soviet Union (USSR) – sometimes simplified to “Russia” – were the two superpowers competing for world influence. They never fought directly but competed through the space race, arms race, proxy wars, and spreading their ideas – democracy/capitalism vs. totalitarian system/communism.
