English Test

Naturalization Interview

Please keep in mind that your ability to understand and speak English will be evaluated during your interview by an immigration officer. If you don’t understand a question, feel free to politely ask the officer to rephrase orrepeat it.

During your interview, a USCIS officer will test your ability to read, write, and speak English ( unless you are exempt from the English requirements.) Your skills of communication in English will be verified as follows:

  • Read - To test your ability to read in English, you must read one sentence out of three sentences, as suggested by the officer, and show that you understand the meaning of the sentence. Please use our 75-words-and-phrases learning tool to repeat them.
  • Write - To test your ability to write in English, you must write at least one sentence out of three sentences. Please use our 75-words-and-phrases learning tool to repeat them.
  • Speak - Your ability to speak English is determined by your answers to questions normally asked by immigration officers during the confirmation of your eligibility for naturalization and the review of your N-400 Form.
